Here
are the most commonly asked questions about refinishing:
What
is refinishing?
Very
simply, refinishing is a system by which a very durable, high tech
coating is applied over the existing surfaces without any tear out
or replacement, giving them a like-new look. Some of the surfaces
that can be refinished are porcelain and fiberglass bathtubs and
sinks, ceramic tile, formica, cultured marble and real marble.
This
varies, and can depend on different factors. Different contractors
use different refinishing products and systems. A reputable refinishing
company will only use the best quality products available. Using
top quality products, applied properly, your newly refinished fixtures
will last 10 to 15 years. But, just like with the original surface,
if the surface is not properly taken care of, or is abused, it will
dull and can be damaged over time. It is very important to remember,
that like anything else, you get what you pay for. If you are looking
for the cheapest price, more than likely the finish you get won't
last this long.
Refinishing
is a multi-step system. The first few steps are thorough cleanings
which remove any films, soap scums and oils. Next, repairs such
as missing tiles, holes, cracks, and chips are made. The next step
is to mask off all of the areas that will not be refinished. Next,
a bonding agent is applied to the surfaces. After the bonding agent,
a specially designed undercoating is applied to the surfaces. And
finally the top finish coats are applied. Both the undercoating
and the finish coats are applied with a specially designed spraying
system.
How long does it take to do the average refinishing
job?
90%
of refinishing jobs are completed in less than one day.
How long before the fixtures can be put back
into use?
How do I maintain the finish?
Care
and maintenance of a refinished item is easy and effortless. Due
to the nature of the finishes, a mild liquid cleaner and a soft
cotton towel is all that is required.
When doing a tile job, what happens to the
grout?
Because
the grout is porous it absorbs everything and eventually grows mold,
discolors, and looks dirty. After refinishing, the grout will be
sealed by the new coating. It will still retain the look and texture
of grout but because it is sealed it will no longer hold dirt, grow
mold, or discolor. Clean up is very easy, since it is covered by
the same coating it will wipe clean with a mild liquid cleaner and
a soft cotton towel.
How much money can I expect to save by refinishing?
Depending
on the extent of the work the average refinishing job can save you
up to 75% of the cost of remodeling. Additionally, any improvements
to kitchens or bathrooms will return a reasonably higher value to
your home, giving you a very good return on your investment.
