Reviving Tubs, Showers, and Tile Across Sunland-Tujunga

One-Day Refinishing for Bathtubs, Showers, Sinks, Tile, and Countertops

Porcelain and Fiberglass Maintenance, Inc. has been restoring worn tubs, showers, and tile since 1955, and we’ve been making the trip up into the Sunland-Tujunga foothills from our North Hollywood shop for decades. Homes here run from mid-century cottages on the valley floor to larger properties tucked toward the canyons, and a great many of them still hold their original fixtures. Whether it’s a vintage cast iron tub worth keeping or a fiberglass surround from a later remodel, we bring the surface back rather than tearing out what already works.

Old Cast Iron or Newer Fiberglass? Each Needs Its Own Approach

Because so much of Sunland-Tujunga was built in the early and mid-20th century, a great many bathrooms here still have their original porcelain enamel tubs — cast iron coated in a hard, glass-like finish that feels substantial and rings solid when you tap it. These older tubs were built to last, and in a neighborhood that values the character of its homes, they are often worth keeping. Once the glaze chips, stains, or dulls, refinishing restores that original surface instead of sending a heavy, well-made fixture to the landfill.

Newer construction and later remodels tell a different story. Additions, updated bathrooms, and many homes higher up the hillsides use molded fiberglass or acrylic tub-and-shower units — lighter materials that flex slightly with weight and temperature. That movement is exactly why fiberglass cannot be prepped the way porcelain is: it needs a primer engineered to flex with the surface, or a new finish will not hold.

In plenty of Sunland-Tujunga homes you will find both under one roof — an original cast iron tub in the main bath and an acrylic unit in a newer addition. Once they are worn they can look much alike, but they call for entirely different prep. Reading each surface correctly before any coating goes down is what makes a finish last for years rather than lifting within months.

Refinish, Replace, or Something Else? A Clear Answer for Sunland-Tujunga Homes

The right choice usually becomes clear before you ever reach a price. In most Sunland-Tujunga bathrooms the tub, shower, sink, or countertop is structurally sound and only the surface has worn out — which is precisely when refinishing makes the most sense. These are the five questions homeowners here raise most often before they decide.

How Much Cheaper Is Refinishing Than a Full Replacement?

Substantially, and it comes down to everything a replacement drags along with it. Swapping a tub is not just the new fixture — it is demolition, hauling out the old unit, plumbing adjustments when the replacement does not sit where the old one did, fresh tile or drywall, and often paint to finish the repair. That is several trades on a single job. Refinishing sidesteps all of it by restoring the fixture already in place, which lands the cost at a fraction of a replacement and is why most homeowners start here.

Can an Old, Worn Tub Really Be Brought Back?

In most cases, yes — age alone does not rule a tub out. What refinishing fixes is surface trouble: stains, dullness, chips, surface rust, and even an old coating that has started to peel all come back to a fresh finish. The line it cannot cross is structural damage — a tub cracked through, actively leaking, or soft underfoot from water in the substrate. An older cast iron tub that is simply tired is often an ideal candidate; one that is failing beneath the surface is not, and we will tell you so rather than coat over a problem.

Wouldn't a Drop-In Liner Be Easier Than Refinishing?

It seems that way, but it tends to create more problems than it solves. A liner is a molded shell set over your existing tub rather than a finish bonded to it, so it caps the old surface instead of restoring it — and everything underneath, from rust to old stains, gets sealed in. Water that works its way behind the liner has nowhere to drain, which is how mold and hidden rot take hold. Refinishing bonds directly to the tub, leaving no gap, no trapped moisture, and no hollow give when you step in.

Do You Refinish Vintage Porcelain as Well as Modern Fiberglass?

Yes, and both come up constantly in a neighborhood with this much older housing. Porcelain enamel has to be chemically etched so a new finish can grip its hard, sealed surface, while fiberglass and acrylic need a flexible primer that moves with the material instead of cracking against it. Using the same prep on both is the single most common reason a bargain refinishing job fails within a year. We identify what we are working with first, then prep it the way that material requires.

How Quickly Is the Work Done and Usable Again?

Quickly. A standard refinishing wraps up in a single visit, and the surface is cured and ready for normal use about a day afterward — no crews coming and going across a week. A replacement, by comparison, usually ties up the bathroom for several days between demolition, plumbing, and tile work. For anyone who would rather not lose a bathroom to a drawn-out remodel, that turnaround is often what settles the decision.

Before You Book: Sunland-Tujunga Questions We Hear Most

Yes. We regularly service the hillside and canyon parts of Sunland-Tujunga, not only the homes down on the valley floor. From our North Hollywood shop it is a routine trip up — just give us the address when you book so we can plan the visit around the drive.
Usually, yes. Refinishing is not limited to the original color — most homeowners keep a clean white or off-white, but if your fixture’s shade is dated or no longer made, we can refinish it to a current color or match it as closely as the process allows. It is a common request on the older homes here.
It will, as long as the prep is right. The age of the bathroom matters far less than the condition of the fixture and the bond of the finish — and because we match prep to the material, that bond is what carries the longevity. With non-abrasive cleaners and no harsh scouring pads, a properly refinished surface holds up for many years.
Most jobs can be scheduled within a few days of your request, and the appointment itself is a single visit. Weekend availability shifts with the calendar, so it is worth asking when you call, and we will find the soonest window that suits your household.
Often, yes. For many jobs a short description and a few clear photos of the fixture are enough for us to give you a solid quote up front. If the situation needs a closer look we will arrange it, but plenty of Sunland-Tujunga homeowners get their estimate without waiting on a site visit.
